Fabulous Music Line-Up at The Fabulous Fifth Avenue Fair
Music will fill the air along Fifth Avenue between Sterling to 12th on Sunday. Here is a taste of what #theother5th has planned for your enjoyment.
The Monro is between 11th and 12th Streets.
Brooklyn Music Factory 12-2
In 2011, Leah Shaw quit her job pouring wine at a vineyard, packed a suitcase and her instruments and moved to New York City. Leah wrote her first songs in 2012, released her first EP in May 2013 called 'I'm Just the Same', and then picked up first prize and a $1000 cash prize at the Eddie Owen Open Mic Shootout at Red Clay Theater in Duluth, GA, gaining a nod from industry professionals for songwriting and performance. Leah has since released four additional singles; one was picked up for a sync license on cable television and another was chosen as the winner of the 2014 Our State North Carolina Singer Songwriter Competition. A second EP is due to be released later this year.

The BID Stage will be between Sterling and St John's.
Molly Tigre at The Monro, 1:30pm
A five piece group that weaves elements of North African music- especially from Mali and Ethiopia- into exploratory and progressive jazz. Ethiopian poly-rhythmic funk drinks a progressive jazz cocktail at Miles Davis' 1970's loft party.
The Monro is between 11th and 12th Streets.
Bombay Rickey at the Grand Central Oyster Bar, Brooklyn from 2pm
Called “the future of music” (New York Music Daily), Bombay Rickey is a five-piece band from Ditmas Park, Brooklyn that defies easy categorization. With a unique sound evocative of ’60s movie soundscapes, the band plays both covers and original music that borrow equally from the worlds of surf rock, cumbia, spaghetti-Western, and Bollywood, balanced out with a little coloratura soprano.
The Oyster Bar is between Carroll and Garfield.
The BID Stage outside NY Kids Club from 12pm
Brooklyn Music Factory 12-2
Brooklyn's future rock stars have been practicing hard all year for their biggest gig! Come on down and hear them rock out! brooklynmusicfactory.com.
The Urban Children's Choir (UCC) 2-3
A contemporary singing project based in Brooklyn, NY. The group is for children aged 8 – 12 years old and is open to young people of all ability levels.
The Condescending Liberals 3-4:30
It's not a political statement, it's a mix of fun, dance, jams and folksy tunes with two vocalists signing in harmony. Perfect for a sunny street fair!
Leah Shaw 4:30-6

Bagel Pub on 9th St - a Hidden Gem on #theother5th
Bagel Pub, located on 9th Street near Fifth Avenue, serves up fresh bagels, yes, but so much more. I met with Lauren Kotsis, who owns the store with her husband. They live in Park Slope.
You'll find Bagels, panini, wraps, fresh juices and to my surprise, "make your own salad". The kettle cup bagels are baked on site and can be filled however you like. Lauren tells me that they are happy to customize anything on the menu.
The Bagel Pub doesn't strike me as your typical store and Lauren agrees with me. They play music that people can enjoy sitting and relaxing to. The high tin ceilings and fan make if feel like a high end restaurant. There's not a huge amount of seating, but in the warmer months the front is open to the hustle and bustle of 9th St. Another surprise was the gorgeous backyard, which is huge and extremely quiet. Lauren says they just opened it after the winter and it needs some spring cleaning but people were already outside enjoying it on my visit.
Lauren feels it's important to know your customers and absorb their feedback. She told me she has many loyal customers and because of this she tries to keep the prices as affordable as possible. Quality staff and friendly, professional service are also high on her agenda.
As the store is near the 9th St Subway station, they get a lot of customers coming for breakfast. They do a lot of catering and offer specials like kid's lunch, as well.
It was an absolute pleasure to meet Lauren. I found out her father owns a store on #theother5th too, J and Y Upholstery, on the corner of 15th St. Now I know where she gets her entrepreneurial spirit from.
