Go Fund Chips and Salsa!

Rolie Polie Guacamole has been a pretty steady presence at Fifth Avenue events throughout the years, from outdoor shows in Washington Park to playing at and helping with the annual holiday tree lighting ceremony. They've always been popular with parents and children here in Brooklyn and on the road when they tour.

In about two months, they will launch their 5th album, "Chips and Salsa" and they need your help! Making a quality album is an expensive endeavor, so they've created a Go Fund Me page to help defray the costs.

Do you love Rolie Polie Guacamole's kindie rock? Help them launch it in September by donating now!

By the way, another local kids music artist, Amelia Robinson (aka Mil's Trills) has an album launching in September, as well. She has a special guest spot on Rolie Polie's new album and she's also the resident representative on the Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID's Board of Directors.

This fall sounds like a great time to be a kid!

Busy Summer for the BID

The Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID is working hard this summer to make #theother5th even better. Here's an update:

Vision Zero Mural

The BID has been working with Groundswell (a local non-profit that paints murals with youth artists), the NYC Department of Transportation, Miti Miti Taperia and the owner of 138 Fifth Avenue, to install a mural on the wall facing the Key Food Parking Lot. Work has started on the project and will continue throughout the month of August. The wall will encourage safe driving. A photo of the draft mural is pictured (above). For more information, check out the coverage on dnainfo.com.

Lit Welcome Sign

Last week, a lit sign, welcoming visitors from the Barclays Center, was installed at the corner of Dean Street and Fifth Avenue. It can easily be viewed from the Barclays Center Plaza and makes the Avenue look more warm and welcoming to visitors on event nights. More at dnainfo.com.

Foot Traffic Study

Working with Placemeter, a Park Slope-based start-up, the BID is installing 5 foot traffic sensors along the avenue to measure visitors in real time. The data will be collected for six months starting August 1st.

5th Avenue and NYC&Co

The Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID has been working with NYC&Co (the city's convention and visitors bureau) to bring tourists to 5th Avenue.

This month, the BID's map/brochure was added to NYC & Co's new kiosk in Times Square (see above). The same publication can also be found in hotels throughout Brooklyn.

In addition, in May the BID lead a tour of 5th Avenue for several British publications. Several articles have been written, including this mention in the Mirror

More to come!

Leah Shaw at Summer Strolls!

We're so pleased that musician Leah Shaw is playing at Summer Strolls on July 18th.

As a classically trained bassoonist raised on the Beatles and church hymns, North Carolina-grown Leah Shaw has always been a musician at heart, but it wasn't until she moved to NYC that she truly caught the bug for performing and got downright serious about her knack for songwriting. She found her first audiences busking in the subways, where she began testing out her original songs and perfecting her skills as a multi-instrumentalist.

Find out more about Leah Shaw.

There are four Summer Strolls this summer on 5th Avenue:

South Strolls July 18th & July 25th from 5pm - 9pm from 12th to 18th Streets
North Strolls August 15th & August 22nd 5pm - 9pm from Sterling to Dean.

All the events are outdoors, have so many things to do for you and your family from rock climbings to dancing to karate and capoeira and mini golf. Or, just enjoy the open space and explore Fifth Avenue's many bars, restaurants and stores.
