Buy Mario's Hair!

You may have noticed that Mario DiBiase, owner of Aperitivo and Treasurer of the Park Slope Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District, has been growing his hair and pulling it back into a small ponytail for some time, now. You may have thought that this was just a fashion statement but, in truth, he was growing it for charity!

The time has come folks - I started this trek March 20th 2012 and it has finally grow long enough so I can cut it and donate it. Help me help children that suffer with hair loss as they battle cancer and many other juvenile diseases. Please go to my Fundly Page and make a donation, I will be matching funds up to $500 and all proceeds will go to Children With Hair Loss Charity along with my curly locks.

World Cup: Week 2

Go ahead, admit it. You're suddenly a soccer fan, especially after Team USA's epic, last-minute win against Ghana. It's ok!

World Cup fever has a grip on us all! In fact, if you take a stroll up and down Fifth from early afternoon on, you'll notice that most bars are hosting World Cup fans and many shop keepers are glued to television screens!

This week's game schedule is available via the FIFA website. A good list of places to watch the games on Fifth is available here, although it appears that pretty-much any restaurant, bar or store is a safe bet (okay, don't buy beer and plant yourself in a Fifth Avenue store to watch a match unless you know the store owner or are willing to share your beer with them).

This Saturday: Summer Starts with Music!

You may have noticed that this week we have already begun to transition to summer. Well, it's okay because summer officially begins on Saturday, June 21st and the Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID is going to welcome it with live music!

As part of Make Music NY, an annual citywide musical celebration held on the summer solstace, the BID will be host to musical performances throughout the day, starting at noon. There will also be a small reception held at the President Street Garden (President @ Fifth Avenue).
For the full schedule, go to www.parkslopefifthavenuebid.com/mmny14

That isn't all! We've just learned that Mavi will be hosting a Brooklyn Block Party at their store (205 Fifth Avenue at Union Street) on Saturday from 1-5. They'll be unveiling the new mural on the Union side of the building, so don't miss it!

Sounds like a great day to explore Fifth!

Photos from Pride

Saturday's Brooklyn Pride Festival and Parade on Fifth Avenue were colorful, positive and fun events for the community.

Did you miss the festivities? We took a lot of pictures. Check them out on our Flickr page !

Help South Brooklyn Shakespeare

As you'll recall, last year South Brooklyn Shakespeare produced an amazing version of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' in a parking lot at 17th Street and Fifth Avenue. This year, however, "Shakespeare in the Parking Lot" (as it was known) is branching out into the street (partially because the parking lot was sold).

So, performances of Romeo and Juliet will be taking place at Summer Strolls, right in the middle of Fifth and Seventh Avenues:

July 25th 7:30pm 5th Ave between 17th and 18th
July 26th 2:30pm 7th Ave between 12th and 13th
Aug 15th 7:30pm 5th Ave at Dean St.

The Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID is donating funds to make the production possible, but more will be needed to pull off the additional performances. Please visit their Kickstarter Campaign and give, if you can. The funding will go a long way towards making this summer in the slope truly great!

Save the Kentile Sign?

Sure, it's not on Park Slope's Fifth Avenue, but the Kentile Sign has been an important part of Brooklyn's skyline for decades.

On Saturday we stumbled upon the tail-end of the protest to save the sign from demolition. Community members from Gowanus and Park Slope were on hand, raising their objections and signing petitions. As you can see from the photo we took (above) the scaffolding is up and parts of the sign have already been removed. Time is short.

If you feel strongly about this issue, Council Member Brad Lander is leading the charge against the sign's demolition and has created an online petition that helps explain the issues and calls on the property owner to keep the sign in place or save it for future re-use in another location. The petition is available here.
