Excelsior is More Than Just a Bar!

A cute backyard and a gorgeous interior, Excelsior is a fun and vibrant place to hang out in South Slope.

Excelsior moved from it's 15 year location in center slope to their new location between 15th and 16th, where they have been open for about a year. The space is bigger and has a club feel with an upstairs level for entertaining and a long bar downstairs.

The upstairs space can also be used for private parties. Space for about 50, with a private bar and a stage! Or for performances and shows, just give the team a call.

PARK SLOPE — Stuff your face with pizza or fill your mind with Shakespeare at this year's Summer Strolls street festivals.
The annual series, hosted by the Park Slope Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District, shuts down stretches of Fifth Avenue to cars and turns the street into a neighborhood party.
Each Summer Stroll runs from 5 to 9 p.m. and features food, drink, dancing, live music and activities such as giant street chess, climbing walls, and vintage car shows.
"We're excited to offer amazing free entertainment to our neighborhood, thanks to the creativity and commitment of our merchant partners,” said Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID executive director Mark Caserta in announcing the Summer Strolls. “We've got something for everyone — from Shakespeare to a Doggy Fashion Show, from a kids carnival to a pizza eating contest."

This year's schedule is:
► July 16, South Slope Summer Stroll No. 1, Fifth Avenue between 12th and 18th streets. This Summer Stroll includes a chance to take your canine companion for a spin on the catwalk at a well-attended (and free) doggy fashion show, 6 p.m. outside Freddy's Bar, 627 Fifth Ave. (at 17th Street).
► July 23, South Slope Summer Stroll No. 2, Fifth Avenue between 12th and 18th streets. See a free outdoor production of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" with a 1940s noir look performed by South Brooklyn Shakespeare.
► Aug. 13, North Slope Summer Stroll No. 1, Fifth Avenue between Dean and Sterling streets. LuLu's Cuts & Toys will celebrate its 15th year on Fifth Avenue with a free carnival for kids that kicks off at 5 p.m. in front of LuLu's at 48 Fifth Ave.
► Aug. 20, North Slope Summer Stroll No. 2, Fifth Avenue between Dean and Sterling streets. Test the limits of your stomach at a free pizza eating contest hosted by Sal Basille and Francis Garcia of The Cooking Channel's "Pizza Masters." The cousins are better known to New Yorkers as the owners of Artichoke Basille's Pizza, which opened a Park Slope branch in August 2015. Contestants will battle it out to see who can down the most of the pizzeria's signature cheesy, gooey artichoke-topped pizza.

Naresh of Emcon Retiring After 28 years of Service

After 28 years serving our community, Naresh Bhagroo is now retiring and handing the business over to his son Caesar.

Well known and loved, Naresh has worked for and then owned Emcon Pharmacy in the north end of the BID and has spend nearly three decades supporting the community. Counseling customers, dispensing prescriptions and providing special attentive care led to Naresh building a long list of loyal friends and neighbors.

Naresh did his internship at Emcon while studying pharmacy at Long Island University in Brooklyn. After he graduated he was offered a permanent job as supervising pharmacist. After a few years he became a partner of the Corporation and later became President.

The community will very much miss the warmth Naresh dispensed alongside prescriptions. We wish him well and thank him from #theother5th.

Welcome to Caesar and here's to another 30 years of Emcon!

This Weekend Celebrate with the Leopoldi Family!

50 years on 5th! Joe Leopoldi told us the family story of the store, which we have shared below:

Joe and Flo spent many hours a day working in the luncheonette. Joe had a strong, independent, entrepreneurial spirit and saw an opportunity when Fazio Hardware at 415 5th Avenue went up for sale. He was a strong believer in the American ideal of free enterprise. He wanted to be his own boss. He bought the hardware store and closed the luncheonette. The store kept it's old fashioned, "real hardware store" feel with it's old ceiling fans, little wooden drawers in the wall, old wooden counter and squeaky floor. An avid gardener himself, Joe felt it was important to have a well stocked garden department, in addition to a well-stocked houseware and appliance section in the store. Joe played his favorite music, 1940's "swing" on the radio.

The store survive the tough 1970's when the City went through a financial crisis. Over the years, Joe had his children help out at the store doing jobs like sweeping, breaking up boxes, washing windows, stocking shelves. He felt it was important for his children to grow up with a strong work ethic. As the years went by, the kids had more important roles in the store. Joe Leopoldi died in 1989. His sons continued his legacy, and continued to keep the hardware store running strong with the help of their children, even after the big box stores opened up in Brooklyn. Leopoldo Hardware remains a place where customers go for personal, friendly service.

Head down to the store this Saturday and Sunday and celebrate 50 amazing years of serving and supporting the Park Slope community on #theother5th. Thank you Leopoldi Family!
