Photos: Dancing on July 24th

Well, sadly, the band Sirsy had an emergency situation on Tuesday and were not able to make it to Dancing Under the Stars (they'll be back on August 14th). In their place, DJ Chris Style brought his records and spun the hits at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 4th Street.

We took lots of photos, as you can see, above. Also, here is a brief YouTube video we put together.

Next up: Contra dancing with Carl Levine and The Backyard Boys - Jody Kruskal, Anglo concertina; Bob Jones, guitar; Paul Friedman, fiddle.

Don't know what contra dancing is? Look it up!

Fifth Avenue's Own Hot Dog Eating Contest

So, it seems that Fifth Avenue has its very own Hot Dog Eating Contest! We received these photos from the 7/11 on Fifth Ave (520 Fifth Avenue), taken on their special day (July 11th, of course). Besides free Slurpees, they also had some fun events like the contest you see, above.

We think it's time to ramp this contest up and make it big in the coming years. Why should Coney Island have all of the (kind-of gross) fun?

Movies in the Garden

Park Slope's Fifth Avenue may have a lot of things, but it doesn't have a drive-in theater. We do, however, have the next best thing: summer movies in the GreenSpace@President Street (aka the President Street Garden)!

Mark your calendars:

Saturday, July 28
Dressed to Kill

Saturday, August 4
The Phantom Creeps

The GreenSpace@President Street is located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and President Street.

Cartoons start at sundown so bring a chair, some snacks and enjoy a classic film, outdoors in the garden!

Christmas in July at Pink Olive

Our friends at Pink Olive are always full of good ideas. This month, they have a couple of great ways to beat the summer heat:

- Christmas in July: We are 100% in favor of Christmas in July, although Santa would need some shorts and a pair of flip flops. Anyway, join the Pink Olive gang at a launch + party on 7/26. Details are available on their blog. Merry Christmas (in July), everyone!

- Pink Olive is celebrating Staycation Month because, really, who can afford to travel these days? Download their neighborhood map and get free ice cream-scented bubbles. What's not to like? More details here.
