Happy Black Friday!

The holiday shopping season has begun! Sure, we know that the malls and large destination stores will be filled with bargain shoppers, today. But, before heading out, consider this list from Mother Nature Network:

What good does buying locally do?
-It stimulates the local economy. A 2002 study done in Texas showed that for every $100 that was spent in a chain bookstore, only $13 of it was put back into the local economy. But that same $100 spent at a local, independently owned bookstore put $45 back into the local economy. Think of that next time you're deciding to get your coffee from a large chain or the local corner coffee house.

It helps locals keep their jobs. Most people who work in local businesses live locally. By buying from these places, you help your neighbors keep their jobs and that benefits your whole community.
Local businesses give back locally. Do you know who sponsors the little league and softball teams in your town? I do. The local corner coffee house, the corner bar, the independent ice cream parlor (is it beginning to sound like I live in Mayberry? It's not a bad comparison). I also know who donates gift certificates and baskets when the PTA is holding an auction or someone is holding a beef and beer night to raise money for a local cancer patient. It's the same businesses that sponsor my sons' sports teams. By supporting these businesses, I help ensure that they can support the community.
It's good for the environment. Less auto emissions occur when you're going only a few blocks (you could even walk or ride your bike) for what you need vs. traveling miles away to a big box store. If enough people buy locally, it could actually prevent a big box store — which usually devours open space and requires new roads to be built — from infiltrating your community.

If you're buying locally grown food, it’s really good for the environment because you're helping the small farmers keep their farms operational instead of shutting down and selling to developers.

It promotes a sense of community. If you want to get to know your neighbors and others in your community, supporting the local businesses is a great way to do that. Going into my local coffee house is like walking into Cheers. I know the baristas and they know my name; there's one guy who is there every morning who always knows more about what I'm talking about than I do (or so he thinks); I run into other stay-at-home or work-at-home parents during the day; and the coffee is really good.

Make sure to save some of that shopping energy for tomorrow, Small Business Saturday and our tree lighting and late-night shopping event! Park Slope's Fifth Avenue has one of the largest collection of small stores, bars and boutiques in the country!

Above: A video we shot on what Goorin Bros. (195b Fifth Avenue) has to offer this holiday season. Sure, they have multiple locations across the country. But, they are also a family-owned small business that sells many American-Made hats. Check them out!

Philippines Fundraiser

As we know all-too-well here in New York City, the days and weeks following a devastating weather event can be very difficult. It is during this time when charity and volunteer efforts play the most important role.

There are few weather events more devastating than the recent typhoon that hit the Philippines and in its aftermath, the people there definitely need a helping hand. Park Slope, of course, is stepping up to the plate to do its part!

This Thursday, November 21, Du Jour Bakery is teaming up with chef Dale Talde (of Pork Slope and Talde) to host a prix fixe family-style dinner to support relief efforts in the Philippines following Typhoon Yolanda. Reservations are available for 6:30pm and 8:30pm through Wednesday, November 20, and cost $50 per adult, $25 per child under 10 years old, and all proceeds will go to the Philippine Red Cross.

Call the bakery at 347-227-8953 to reserve your seat.

Traffic Safety in the Slope

Given the recent concern about traffic safety in Park Slope, we thought it would be good to help spread the word about an important meeting taking place on Thursday, November 21st at Congregation Beth Elohim (247 Garfield Place).
Neighbors will be given an opportunity to discuss actions that the city is already taking and help brainstorm new safety measures for the current and incoming administration.
For more information, contact saferstreetsNYC@gmail.com or info@cbebk.org.

Festive Fifth

The holiday season is nearly upon us. It's hard to believe, isn't it? Actually, maybe it isn't, given the fact that it's snowing and holiday decorations have been available in stores since August.

Anyway, Fifth Avenue is the place to be this holiday season for all of your shopping, eating and celebrating.

The season kicks off on November 30th, Small Business Saturday. This annual reminder to "shop small" (sponsored by American Express) is a growing holiday tradition, nationwide. Come down to see what Fifth has to offer and stay for our tree lighting event: 6:30 pm at S'Nice (3rd St and Fifth Avenue). There will music by the MS 51 Chorus, Rolie Polie Guacamole and Puppetry Arts, hot chocolate, candy canes and Santa!

Then, we'll be making Fifth Avenue an extra-special place to be for the next 3 Saturdays until Christmas. Stores will stay open until at least 9 pm, carolers will stroll the strip and Santa will be making stops along the avenue in an antique car.

Save the dates and get ready to visit Festive Fifth this holiday season!

South Slope Projections

If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and take a walk to the far south end of the Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID between 17th and 18th Streets. There, you will find some great Fifth Avenue institutions like Eagle Provisions, Has Beans, South and, of course, Freddy's.

If you happen to drop by at night, make sure to take a look up above Freddy's and South to see a new art installation, consisting of movie collages created by Freddy's co-owner Donald O'Finn. This is all part of a new effort to attract eyeballs to a fantastic, but under-appreciated part of Park Slope's favorite commercial strip.

A sample of one of Donald's short films is posted, above.

Also, come holiday season, don't be surprised if you see some familiar holiday classics projected on the building. Details to come!

Help The Chocolate Room Move and Expand!

As you may have heard, after 10 successful years at 86 Fifth Avenue, the owners of The Chocolate Room are seeking to move their Fifth Avenue institution to a new location (51 Fifth Avenue, in the former Mega Glass and Mirrors space).

The move is going to be really good for the avenue but, unfortunately, it's also going to be VERY expensive. They'll need approximately $200,000 to replace older equipment and to pay for new design plans, permits, plumbing, flooring, electricity, and more. They are also building an outdoor patio space in the new location, something they've always dreamed of!

After years of positive contributions to our community, the owners of The Chocolate Room are seeking some help to defray the cost of the move. They are seeking to raise $40,000 (20%) through a Kickstarter campaign. Please, consider helping this important Fifth Avenue shop move and expand.

Fifth Avenue Committee Fundraiser

Our friends at the Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC) are having a fundraiser this month that we thought you should know about. FAC, in case you didn't know, is a local non-profit that has done a lot to redevelop Fifth Avenue, create affordable housing and improve the lives of low-income residents.

On November 19th, you can help FAC and their affiliate Neighbors Helping Neighbors by attending their event at Union Hall from 6:30-9pm. There will be an open wine and beer bar, appetizers, and music by DJ Steve Reynolds who hosts the "Party Like it's 1999" events at Union Hall and the Bell House.

Tickets, starting at $100, are available here.
