Star Wars Sleepover

Local non-profit (and frequent Fifth Avenue BID event partner) Puppetry Arts is hosting an amazing "Star Wars Sleepover" at Ripley's Believe it or Not in Times Square. Dress as your favorite Star Wars character, bring a pillow, blanket and pajamas and stay overnight.

The event will feature real Star Wars characters, pizza, games and a scavenger hunt. A portion of the event proceeds will go to support Puppetry Arts, so help out, if you can!

NYC Bike Share Program

As you may have heard, a new bike share program will be launched in New York City this summer. It will be run by Alta Bicycle Share and funded by private sponsorship and user fees. Even better, you will have a say in where the docking stations will be located. Yes, they could even be placed along Park Slope's Fifth Avenue!

Art in the House

Let's face it, once the holiday season is over, winter can be a bit of a drag. It's especially difficult if you are shut in your apartment with the kids on a cold, dreary afternoon after school.

If that sounds familiar, you might want to consider enrolling your kids in This Art in the HouseWinter 2012 session at the The Old Stone House.

ART IN THE HOUSE at the Old Stone House is a unique after-school art program for ages 7-11 inspired by history. Beneath the magnificent gabled ceilings of the light-filled big room of the Old Stone House, we examine arts and crafts techniques from the past—both recent and distant—and use them as a starting point for our own fun and funky hands-on art activities. Includes painting, print-making and clay projects, with an emphasis on functional "takeaways" the students have created themselves, such as tricorn hats, weather vanes, greeting cards and drinking glasses.

On the last day of class we celebrate with an "art opening" for parents and friends.

Timboos to Close Wednesday

We recently noted that Timboos (477 Fifth Avenue) would be closing soon, after many decades of business on Park Slope's Fifth Avenue. Sadly, it appears that tomorrow night (Wednesday, January 25) will be their last night.

So, carve out a little time in your schedule and come out for one last drink at Timboos tonight or tomorrow night before their lights go out forever!

Is 20 (mph) Plenty for Park Slope?

The city's Department of Transportation is looking at locations in all five boroughs to install neighborhood slow zones, a community-based program that reduces speed limits from 30 mph to 20 mph within a select area and adds safety measures in order to change driver behavior. The department is currently accepting applications from neighborhood groups and individuals for these zones.

Is Park Slope the right place for a neighborhood slow zone? You can have a voice in where, how, and if these zones should be installed in and around our community. Take part in this important and informative discussion with elected officials and neighborhood leaders, sponsored by the Park Slope Civic Council.

Body Challenge 2012

Did you promise yourself to get back into shape in 2012? Yeah, us too. Well, the thing is, it's hard to do without a little motivation, you know?

The Fifth Avenue Fitness Collective (42 Fifth Avenue) may have an answer, though. Prizes. Yup, they want to bribe you back into shape with prizes.

Their Body Challenge starts this Sunday, January 22nd. The cost to enter is $115 and includes unlimited classes for the eight weeks of the challenge, plus three weigh-ins (circumference measurements, body fat measurements and weight).

-1st Prize is 12 FREE personal training sessions
- 2nd Prize is 3 FREE personal training sessions

Now, there is a bit of small print, but it's best to drop by or contact them if you are interested:

1-The winner will be chosen based on percentage of body fat lost in relation to where they begin at the 1st weigh-in. If someone who is 30% B/F loses 5%, and someone who is 25% B/F loses 5%, the the person who started at 25% wins because their starting percentage was lower, and thus yielded a higher percentage of loss overall.
2-Must have a personal training package with Fifth Avenue Fitness Collective.3-Must train an average of AT LEAST one time per week.

E-Waste Events

Okay, so you got the latest electronic gadgets and gear for Christmas and Hanukkah and you don't know what to do with your tired old/broken stuff, right? Well, don't throw it away!

This coming Sunday, January 15, the Lower East Side Ecology Center, in partnership with the Prospect Park Alliance, the Department of Parks and Recreation, and Council Member Brad Lander, will be hosting an Electronics Recycling Event! It will take place on Prospect Park West at 3rd Street and run from 10:00am - 4:00pm.

You can find more details about the event here. Before dropping by, though, don't forget to check out the online list of acceptable items for recycling.

While we are mentioning it, save Saturday, March 24th from 9:00am - 4:00pm. The Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID and the Lower East Side Ecology Center will be hosting an E-Waste event, using funds allocated by Council Member Lander. The location is being firmed up but, in the meantime, check out the photos from last year!

If you are looking for a cool cultural event to attend, we suggest that you drop by Fifth Avenue's cultural center, the Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX) next week for a series of special performances by their Artist in Residency (AIR) program.

Since 1991, the AIR program has provided participating artists with one to two years of uninterrupted artistic, technical, and administrative support, as well as the rehearsal space and guidance necessary to take chances, refine their craft and expand their horizons.

Works in Progress Showcases allows these artists take their new works-in-development from the studio to the stage. The evenings are designed to offer both artists and audience the opportunity to exchange their impressions of the work. After the artists show their excerpts, they return to the stage for a moderated discussion that delves into their intentions and inspirations, and the audience’s perception. So, stick around!

Recent Changes Along Fifth

Yes, we took our monthly walk along Fifth Avenue yesterday. Not a good idea when the temperature is below 30 degrees.

Anyway, as we noted last week, January can be bumpy, as businesses assess their year after the Christmas season is over and decide whether to keep going in the new year. Sure enough, there were a lot of changes along the Avenue as of January 3rd, although there are still a lot of positive signs:

* Kappa Sake House (388 Fifth Avenue)
* Aunt Suzie's Restaurant (247 Fifth Avenue)
* Perch (365 Fifth Avenue)
* Comida (230 Fifth Avenue)- this isn't 100%, but the phone appears to be disconnected.
* Scoopz (158 Fifth Avenue)- we hadn't seen this shop open in some time and late last month, the name was cut from the awning.
* Thrifty Liquidators (483 Fifth Avenue)

Opening

* Lullaby Baby (488 Fifth Avenue)- opening soon
* Park Slope Academy of Jiu Jitsu (518 Fifth Avenue)- opening soon
* George's II Barber Shop (78 Fifth Avenue)

There is also construction at a number of spaces, including 202 Fifth Avenue, near Union Street.

In addition, a sign announcing "Coming Soon! We Buy Gold" was posted at 327 9th Street.

A Look Back at 2011

As we like to say, the one thing you can count on, on Park Slope's Fifth Avenue, is change.

This year saw explosive growth in the number of restaurants and bars on the Avenue, along with the amazing emergence of a vintage and antique district, of sorts, from Dean to 18th Street. Our own monthly, unscientific survey shows that the commercial vacancy rate shrunk from about 11% in January to under 8% in December. Not bad, given the state of the economy!

Yet there is another side to the story, as Fifth Avenue lost an amazing number of businesses (all of them chronicled by Here's Park Slope yesterday). It will also soon lose two long-time community anchors, Aunt Suzie's and Timboo's.

While we hope for the best, the beginning of 2012 could be bumpy, as businesses assess their holiday sales numbers and battle the winter weather (if the winter ever arrives). Still, a great number of long-time vacant spots are under construction, the economy is slowly improving, the sidewalks are cleaner than ever and the Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID keeps working hard to make Fifth a better place.

Overall, things are looking up for Park Slope's Fifth Avenue. Here's to a great 2012!

Now that theholidays are in full swing, I’ve come to appreciate Scaredy Kat asan excellent resource for quality and novel gift decorations,stocking stuffers, and party accessories.

I usually findholiday wrapping paper to be a total bore—reams and reams ofpredictable patterns—so I was thrilled to find these individualsheets of paper ($3.75) during my last visit. Though notholiday-specific, the prints are wonderfully vintage and excellentquality. I picked up a sheet featuring a print of an early New YorkCity transit map to wrap one of my Christmas gifts (one sheetperfectly covers your standard-sized retail gift box). To give thegift more of a holiday touch, I made some paper snowflakes to glueover the paper. At least in decoration, Brooklyn will have a whiteChristmas!

These miniature ornaments caught my eyeas a fun and easy holiday gift for a younger member of the family. Ipicked up the Hello Kitty set ($13.95) for my sister, who will enjoyusing the ornaments as decorations even after the holidays havepassed.

Seeing these Rudolph, the Red-nosedReindeer party crackers ($14.95) made me wish so badly that I washosting a holiday party of my own. Add silly paper hats and anactivity that pops to a boozy soiree, and you’re got yourself amemorable night.

This past weekend marked the arrival of much anticipated winter weather, meaning it was time to finally break out my favorite mitten and hat set. A few minutes outside, and I realized that my fingers felt a bit drafty. As I quickly discovered, the moths that had surreptitiously plagued our closets for months, not satisfied with my wooly winter sweaters, had feasted on my mittens as well. With cold weather and chunky knits initially on my mind, I strolled along Fifth to see what warm things I could find.

What first strikes you about Flirt—after the light red benches outside—is its décor. The boutique’s vibrant and floral wallpaper and collection of antique furniture demand your attention as much as their assortment of playful, girly accessories and unique apparel. The items here can be pricey, but for good reason: the products are high quality, and you’re supporting independent designers. Flirt also offers basic sewing, knitting and craft classes at their studio space. Visit their website for more information.

Flirt has a wonderful selection of hats and mittens, but these convertible fingerless owl mittens ($40) from Wooden Ships by Paola Buendia were my pick. I’m a sucker for critter designs, and the owl decoration is subtle enough that I wouldn’t feel silly wearing them out and about. The knit owl cap ($64), also from Wooden Ships, is the perfect complement to the mittens. Hats can be a tough sell for some ladies (myself included) but this one fits wonderfully, snugly and attractively.

Unlike the quatrefoil studs at another shop on a certain Fifth Avenue, these clover earrings ($36) are classy and fabulous without the unpalatable price tag. They’d make a lovely present, for someone you know or just yourself.

Cooking has quickly developed into a new hobby of mine, just in time for the holidays. On Thanksgiving I baked sugar cookies with my sister, and as the flour diffused all over our darkly colored dinner clothes I lamented not having covered up before we embarked on such a messy project. This poppy apron by Funktion ($48) is cute, fun, and great for throwing on over your holiday dress while you’re get getting ready for a dinner party.

Unsilent Night

Make Music New York, the annual celebration with over 1,000 free outdoor concerts on the first day of summer, is launching a dozen participatory musical parades on the first night of winter (December 21st) which will be open to all.

A full list of events is available here, but Park Slope residents can participate locally by dropping by Grand Army Plaza, 18th Street and Fifth Avenue or Dean Street and Fifth Avenue at 6:30 PM. Each group will walk and converge on 4th Street and Fifth Avenue by 7:15ish and enjoy hot chocolate and cookies with Santa Claus.

It seems that St. Nick just can't get enough of Park Slope's Fifth Avenue!

Over the past two weeks, he has made appearances at Piramide and Alta Voce, as well as the Holiday Tree Lighting event. Next Sunday, he's scheduled at Melt (440 Bergen Street at Fifth Avenue) from 2 - 5 pm.

In addition (this just in), he's going to make a stop on Fifth Avenue's 7-11 on Saturday the 17th from 2-5. There will be Hot Chocolate and Santa will bring candy canes.

Maybe Santa should consider purchasing a Park Slope brownstone and stay awhile.

Lucia is one of my favorite places to shop on Fifth. Their racks are stocked with a lovely selection of day-to-evening outfits (perfect for any upcoming office holiday parties!), not to mention some great options if you’re still searching for the perfect dress for New Years Eve. While browsing, keep an eye out for dresses by Ark & Co. I’ve found items by the brand consistently well fitting and always fabulous. At the time of posting, they still have one of these left!

The first dress I tried on was an adorable short-sleeve bird print dress by Peppermint ($68). Lately I’ve been catching up on episodes of The New Girl, and the dress immediately reminded me something Zooey Deschanel’s character might wear. I’m a size Small, and the fit was comfortable if not a bit looser than I would normally prefer. A brown belt would pull it together nicely.

Green is my favorite color, so I was excited to find this olive dress by Plum ($72). I loved this item because it’s nice enough to wear to the office but also fun enough that I’d be happy wearing it to a happy hour or dinner with friends after work.

I tend to avoid black dresses when I’m looking for new additions to my wardrobe, but this one by Jack ($92) is sweet enough to warrant an exception. The capped lace sleeves and gathered waist add a touch of ladylike delicacy to the dress, while the ruched, fitted top and scooped neckline give it some sass.

Well, the holiday lights are up, the banners have been installed and the Holiday Tree is up and ready to be lit.

What else is new on Fifth?

* Sai Thai Kitchen (437 Fifth Avenue) opened in the former Fatoosh space. We welcome them to Fifth Ave! Check out their website here.

* Glow Accessories (219 Fifth Avenue) opened between President and Union. This is the second outpost for Glow. Their first outpost is located on Seventh Avenue.

* Kiku is taking the larger space formerly occupied by Babouche (2 Lincoln Place) and will close their current location when the transition is complete.

* PC Tech (337 9th Street) has closed.

* Oko Frozen Yogurt and Tea (154 Fifth Avenue) closed this week. Details here.

* Great Lakes (284 Fifth Avenue) closed after what appeared to be a disagreement over rent.

Also, while it is not obvious from the street, there will be a big change on the avenue at the end of the month. Timboo's Bar, which has been open as a bar on the avenue for more than 60 years, will close its doors on December 31st.

We are sorry to see them go and wish the owners all the best.

If you take a stroll along Fifth Avenue between Dean and 18th Streets this week, you may notice a change if you look up at the light poles. The Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID is installing decorative banners to help mark the district and celebrate the holiday season.

Designs include artwork by Fifth Avenue artist Jonathan Blum and a series of banners depicting the 12 days of Christmas, installed near 1st through 12th streets.

A Couple of Holiday Retail Items

Odd Twin is having their annual "37 Days Till Christmas" party tomorrow night. Drop by and give thanks for your blessings while picking out x-mas gifts! There will be free beer and wine and some great live music. The party starts at 6pm, with live music from 8-11pm.
New York Magazine has released its annual Holiday Gift Guide which includes items from Fifth Avenue's own Cog and Pearl and Goorin Brothers hat shop. There doesn't seem to be a way to link directly to their items, so check out the online guide here.

4th Avenue Forum

In case you are interested, there is a town hall meeting tonight on the Future of 4th Avenue. It will take place at St. Tomas Aquinas Church’s meeting hall at 9th Street and 4th Ave at 6pm.

The event will have a mystery "who done it" theme with more than 30 businesses from Dean to 18th Street participating. Admission is $15, which includes 2 drink chips good for any house drink at participating businesses. Scavenger teams will meet at Timboo’s Bar (477 Fifth Avenue at the corner of 11th Street) at 7 pm sharp where Hunt Lists will be distributed. Teams will finish at Piramide Restaurant (499 Fifth Avenue near 12th Street) where points will be tallied and winners will be awarded! Aunt Suzie's Says Goodbye

We're sad to report that Aunt Suzie's restaurant will be closed at the beginning of 2012. Below is a message from Aunt Suzie's owner/Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID Director Irene Lo Re:

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Aunt Suzie’s has been in Park Slope for 25 years and we feel privileged to have been a part of the neighborhood and a part of your lives.

It has been a wonderful run and it is time to say goodbye. Pat, Irene, Ginny (sister) Liz (niece) Tamara (daughter) and the staff are all sad to go. We will miss all of you but to “Everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the heaven.”

This restaurant was inspired by my mother who was Aunt Suzie to all who knew her. She embodied the values of family, sharing and giving both emotionally and with the physical nourishment of wonderful Italian food. We hope we did some of these things for you.

We would like to give special thanks to all our current and past employees without whom Aunt Suzie’s could not have been so successful. Antonio and Michelangelo are two of the hardest working cooks I know. Tiffany loves all the customers, especially the ones with kids. We have watched Patrick grow up in our midst and it has been wonderful to work with him.

Our last day of operation will be January 1, 2012.

Save the Date: Small Business Saturday

Ok, now that Halloween is over, it's time to start thinking about Thanksgiving and the holiday season. Don't worry, we'll ease you into this. We know that it's hard to believe that it's November 1st already.

As you know, the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, is the busiest shopping day of the year. However, most of the shoppers on this day tend to go to malls and big box stores where the deals are big and the discounts are steep. Generally speaking, it's really not a great shopping day for local business districts like Park Slope's Fifth Avenue.

For the second year a row, though, American Express is working to make the next day, Saturday, November 26th, a special day for small retailers. The 2nd annual Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year. On November 26, join millions of Americans to shop small at their favorite local stores and help fuel the economy.

Stone Park Cafe: On Monday, Stone Park started taking reservations for Thanksgiving Dinner. Yeah, it's actually that time of year, already! Meals will be served from 1 to 7:00 pm, $65 per person. You know, October tends to be a slower month until you get to the end. Then, everyone starts jamming events in around Halloween. This year is no different. Here are some of the events we are aware of:

Tuesday, October 25: Fifth Avenue's Bogota Latin Bistro will be hosting a "Dine Out for a Cause" event. Eat at the restaurant tomorrow night and a portion of the evening's revenue will be donated to The Brooklyn Young Mothers' Collective. Make your reservation here.

Saturday, October 29 11:00am: The 6th Annual Haunted Halloween Carnival will be held Saturday October 29th with Free Admission 11:00am-4:00pm. It will be hosted at the 1st Street Recreation Center of PS 372 between 4th and 3rd Ave with special guest R2-D2! Monday, October 31: Before and after the Halloween parade, Fifth Avenue businesses will be doing a little something special. Here's what we know, so far:

-Bogota Latin Bistro: All dining customers showing up in Halloween costumes who order an entree will receive a complimentary classic Mojito. The Halloween special begins Saturday night dinner, Oct. 29, and goes through all day Sunday (including brunch) and all day Monday, Oct. 31.

The theatre company Polybe + Seats will be performing Alice, Or the Scottish Gravediggers at The Old Stone House tonight at 8 pm.

Arriving in time for the Halloween season, this sinister French melodrama from 1829 is René-Charles Guilbert de Pixérécourt’s take on one of the most gruesome and notorious scandals of his day - the Burke & Hare murders, in which the victims’ corpses were sold for use in medical dissections.

If you aren't yet in the Halloween spirit, this just might be the play to get you in the mood. The production runs through November 13th, Thursdays through Saturdays (8 pm) and Sundays (3 pm). All seats $18.Get your tickets now via Smarttix.

Recent Changes Along Fifth

Yesterday we took our monthly, detailed stroll along Park Slope's Fifth Avenue. One thing seems pretty clear: the number of vacant commercial spaces along Fifth is smaller than it was in January. In fact, based on our surveys, the commercial vacancy rate is at its lowest level so far, this year

So what's new along Fifth?

Ricky's Halloween pop-up shop opened in the former Blockbuster Video space at 550 Fifth Avenue. If you don't have a costume yet, you still have nearly 2 weeks to shop around but don't wait until the last minute (yes, we know you will wait until the last minute).

The take-out space that is part of Fornino Park Slope is now called Polpette. Check out their interesting meatball menu here.

Caramello will soon be opening up in the old Patio lounge space. Expect tempting baked goods and gelato. More details here.

Back to Earth Health and Beauty looks almost ready to open at 139 Fifth Avenue.

Ozzies will be closed for 3 or 4 weeks.

Al Di La Expanding

Brownstoner.com is reporting that one of Fifth Avenue's most popular restaurants, Al Di La, will be expanding to Washington Avenue in "Crown Heights" (Prospect Heights? Not sure where the lines are drawn these days).

Help The Old Stone House

Our friends at The Old Stone House have a challenge grant that they need to match. We thought we would help them spread the word. Read below but note that some of the events mentioned have recently taken place:

Dear Neighbor,

During the past 6 years, your support has helped the Old Stone House transform Washington Park and JJ Byrne Playground into the liveliest small park in Brooklyn. The playground renovation is on schedule for completion in March 2012. It is going to be spectacular! We are also planning a major renovation in our gallery space that is an exciting and innovative interpretation of the story of the Old Stone House, focused on the Battle of Brooklyn and life during the 18th century here in our community.

And now, the Brooklyn Community Foundation has offered us a challenge grant to raise $10,000 from you, our neighbors, to signal your support for our efforts.

While the city and state cut "non-essential" programs, the Old Stone House is filling the gaps. We continue to expand our history and environmental education programs, which served more than 7,000 students last year. Our fall season opens with a Bitters Cocktail Tasting on October 15 to celebrate Polybe + Seats English-language premiere of Alice, or the Scottish Gravediggers. In addition to great readings by authors Brian Merlis, Isabel Hill and Gina Barreca, we'll also host community events including the Brooklyn Bike Jumble and our annual Harvest Fest with Park Slope Parents.

Halloween is coming up soon so when we saw this story posted on Brownstoner, we just had to repost it.

It seems that Scouting New York is holding a scary homes scouting contest this month. To enter, just take a picture of a place in your neighborhood that you feel could be haunted, write a little description and send it to them via email.

The prizes are pretty great (and scary). Winners get tickets to Nightmare, a truly frightening haunted house experience in Manhattan!

So, are there an buildings along Fifth Avenue or nearby that would make a great entry into the contest? Frankly, we've always been a little freaked out by the Mambo Lounge (photo above) but maybe that's just because it is empty.

Dive Bars on Fifth

Park Slope's Fifth Avenue has no shortage of bars, that's for sure. In fact, the list of places to grab a drink keeps growing every month, it seems.

According to complex.com, though, we don't seem to be a good spot for "Dive Bars." Of course, that depends on how you define the term. According to Wikipedia, dive bars "generally have a relaxed and informal atmosphere—they are often referred to by local residents as "neighborhood bars," where people in the neighborhood gather to drink and socialize."

Complex listed only O'Connor's (39 Fifth Avenue) on their recently published Top 50 list of Dive Bars. O'Connors is, of course, a good choice, but by Wikipedia's definition, we certainly have more great dive bars to contribute. Timboos? Jackies 5th Amendment? Does Ginger's count? How about Smith's Tavern?

Park Slope certainly does love its stoop sales, right? If you are a fan, this is the event for you. Shop at the Super Stoop Sale and the proceeds benefit Fifth Avenue's own Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX). Everyone wins!

The event takes place on Saturday and Sunday, October 15-16, from 11:00am – 5:00pm at 438 3rd St. (at corner of 6th Avenue). Save the Date!

The 6th Annual Haunted Halloween Carnival will be held on Saturday October 29th at the 1st Street Recreation Center of PS 372 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission will be FREE.

This will be a busy, fun event: $1 snacks, games, and activities, $2 haunted house, $3 bounce castle. Plus, Jedi nights, Stormtroopers, R2-D2, puppet and mask making, raffles, prizes and more!

The Jewish New Year is fast approaching. If you are looking for a place to celebrate or you need something special to serve your guests at home, local Israeli restaurant Miriam (79 Fifth Avenue) has created a holiday menu that you should know about:

Starters

* Chicken noodle soup with Jewish meat dumplings

* Gefilte fish with garlic lemon carrots, cabbage salad and horseradish beet paste

* Chopped liver with caramelized onions in a cucumber shell

Main Course

* Brisket with noodle kugel and sautéed lemon garlic string beans

* Roasted quail stuffed with Israeli couscous , roasted butternut squash and pumpkin seeds

Dessert

* Apple honey cake with cardamom infused whipped cream.

In case you missed the sad news: last week Greg Murjani, best known in the area for his "Mr. Rubbish" business, died of a severe heart attack.

Murjani was a board member of the Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID, a Fifth Avenue property owner, a successful businessman and a community leader. He will be sorely missed in Park Slope.

Our hearts go out to his family and friends.

The Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID has announced a new, upcoming event.

On Wednesday, November 9th and Thursday, November 10th, there will be music in the streets and $5 dollar deals in stores, bars and restaurants along the Avenue from Dean to 18th Streets, from 7-9 pm.

Well, we are more than halfway though September, so it's about time to start thinking about Halloween, don't you think?

This year’s Park Slope Halloween Parade will take place on October 31st (of course). It will start at 6:30 pm at 14th Street and 7th Avenue, travel down 7th Avenue to 3rd Street, turn left, and end at 5th Avenue.This year's theme is...BOO-Klyn.
