Fall Shopping on Fifth

With so many one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques located along Park Slope’s Fifth Avenue, we’re highlighting a few new items for the Fall. We'll be doing this at least once per season, so stay tuned!

Beautiful host/hostess gifts:

O Live Brooklyn’s Gourmet Gift Pack features their all natural White and Black Truffle Oil, Roasted French Walnut Oil, Toasted Japanese Sesame Oil, Aged white Balsamic Vinegar and Aged Traditional Balsamic vinegar in 60ml bottles. Nuff said. ($50)

Our hearts skipped a beat when we saw these Simply Curated Candles, from Annie’s Blue Ribbon General Store. Made in Brooklyn, they’re handmade and poured into vintage glasses, making each one completely unique.  The scents are amazing – Guava Fig Soy, Sage-Cedar Soy, Vanilla Lavendar Soy, Grapefruit Bergamot Soy. ($48)

Fall is the perfect time to get cookin’ at home - and how better to organize your clipped and curated recipes than the Midnight Garden Recipe Tin Box? This elegant, vintage-inspired box comes with 12 dividers and 24 cards.  From Pink Olive, noted for its whimsical gifts for happiness and home. ($38)

Cool Kids:

For the little man in your life, there’s the Hiho Batik’s Taxi Hoodie, in vintage black for the super-cool kid. Since each one is a handmade batik design, all have slight variations making them as individual as the lucky boy you have in mind.  ($75)

Sure, we’ve all been visited by the Tooth Fairy but this charming Tooth Fairy Mouse in Matchbook from Pink Olive delivers winsome in a whole new wonderful way. ($36)

Kids have a lot of gear to carry - and what better way to lighten the load than a Personalized Messenger Bag from Hiho Batik with the name of the birthday boy or girl. ($50)

We love this Camo Sweatshirt. Super cozy, it will keep the wearer warm all fall.  Available in S, M, L ($50) Annie's Blue Ribbon General Store

Hats are hot – and Goorin Bros. , a family-owned fourth generation shop, has a most appealing selection.

We especially love the Jessica Rogers, a captivating cloche with an asymmetrical brim and a retro vibe ($65)

Also, the Maise Lock a hand-crafted wool felt pinch fedora in deep purple ($130)

Celebrating Women's Small Business Month with Flirt Brooklyn

Patti at 586 5th Ave

Women owned businesses still only make up 30% of the total of small businesses in the US, but have grown by 59% since 1997 to 8.6 million today. Much of this growth is thanks to better access to training, resources and access to capital and contracts after the signing of the Women's Business Ownership Act of 1988 and the establishment of the Women Business Center program and the National Women's Business Council.

Flirt Brooklyn
You can go into many stores on our own 5th Avenue in Park Slope and see women entrepreneurs providing beautiful products, great service and training. One such store is Flirt Brooklyn. They have two warm and inviting stores, both, we are pleased to say, in the 5th Ave BID. So to celebrate Women's Small Business Month I visited Patti Gillstrap, one of the three women owners (also Seryn Potter and Heather Falcone), at the 586 5th Avenue near 16th Street where they also have a sewing studio; Home Ec.
Flirt Label Designs

Home Ec
The sewing studio is warm and cosy, there are boxes of samples, material and patterns. There is a bank of sewing machines and lots of space for cutting and designing. Flirt set up intentionally to only sell their own designs in the store, but so many talented designers walked through their door, they then expanded to sell their items too.

Private Classes
Patti showed me so many things that children and adults have made, starting with a basic skirt or bag and then over time building up to a more complex project with more layers, pockets, frills and buttons. You can sign up as a complete beginner and bring your own pattern and material or delve into the many patterns they have in the studio.

Princess Costume
Currently there is a special promotion where new students can spend 2 hours sewing  for $75 instead of the usual $90. This is a great opportunity to get those Halloween Costumes made! Classes are usually Wednesday to Saturday but email Flirt for more information. Flirtbrooklyn@gmail.com

Open Studio
Bags from simple to more complex
If you are already a competent sewer, there are open studio hours for $10 per hour. A great option if you just don't have the space to store or work on a machine at home. Also Patti is there if it all starts to go wrong!
Hats different materials

Shop Local
Flirt is the ideal place to shop local for Small Business Saturday on 29th November. Patti tells me they also hold wish lists, so go and choose some items, leave your long list and then send your Partner in to buy for the Holidays!

Flirt Brooklyn stores: 93 5th Ave near Park Place and 586 5th Ave between 16th and Prospect Ave.

Welcome Back to The Chocolate Room!

We are thrilled to welcome The Chocolate Room back to Park Slope's Fifth Avenue (#theother5th) at 51 Fifth Avenue!

We dropped by on Friday and checked out their bigger, better space and even picked up the newest chocolate bar from Brooklyn's own Mast Brothers (Maple!)

We also took a moment to interview co-owner Naomi Josepher, who is relieved to be back on Fifth, satisfying our collective sweet tooth.

 ---

Interview

Q: We are so excited to have The Chocolate Room open again and we know that the neighborhood is ready to check out the new space. Welcome back!

A: We are ecstatic to be back on 5th Ave. We searched a year for our new home. We found ourselves looking in neighborhoods all over Brooklyn, but we always preferred to stay close by. We were very very lucky to have been able to move into this exact space. It's a space we've known for 10 years, and always had our eye on. We're so grateful for the welcoming this community brings us and for the support over the last 8 months as we've built out. We had many visits from dear friends that would come by to offer words of encouragement and support as we worked day and night. We are deeply grateful for the Brooklyn community that has enabled us to return!

Q:Tell us a little bit about your new location. What has changed ?

A: Bigger space with room for both our guests and more chocolate! We will eventually have an outdoor space, hopefully by spring. We will have an ice cream window for easy access to our delicious homemade, all natural ice creams made in our shops. We have room for ready made cakes! We always encourage placing an order if you know you will need it, but now we have room to create additional Layer Cakes, Almond Cakes, German Chocolate Cakes, Cheesecakes, and more for people to walk in to purchase for last minute needs. We're applying for a full liquor license which we anticipate receiving in a few months.

Q: What are your best sellers at The Chocolate Room and are the best sellers different between your locations?

A: All of the items we offer are very popular but our best sellers would be our Chocolate Layer Cake, Brownie Sundae, and Dark or Classic Hot Chocolates.

Q: Do you have any plans for events or specials at The Chocolate Room, now that you have a bigger space?

A: We are in the process of scheduling free tastings on the weekends. Come by to learn about a variety of companies that produce beautiful chocolate. See our Facebook page or CHOCOboard page on our website for dates of the tasting.

Q: You've been on 5th Avenue for a long time. What are some of your favorite shops, bars and restaurants?

A: Yes, we love 5th Ave. It has a vibe that feels creative and vibrant for us. We are excited to see new stores coming in...we love many stores on 5th. Some of our favorites include: Al di la, Flirt, Gorilla, Jonathan Blum's paintings, Dizzy's, Culture, Graphicolor, Luscious Food, Blue Sky, Pepperoncino, Diana Kane, and many more.

Welcome to Teaus

Teaus, which opened last month at 86 Fifth Avenue, is a tea cafe with deep roots in Flushing, Queens. We dropped by their new Park Slope location this week to meet the crew and get a better idea what they are about.

Welcome to Park Slope's Fifth Avenue! We are excited to have you guys on the Avenue.

We noticed that you have glass bottles for tea. Can you tell us more about that?

A: Our primary goal is to create an environmental bottle that can be reused. We give 50 cent discounts for customers who bring the bottles back for refill. And, we also wanted to have some interesting container for our teas. That is when we thought of the glass bottle.

What are some of your most popular teas?
A: Rose Milk Tea, Mango Green Tea, Triple berry Green Tea. Also, we have some quite special drink called "Tea Smoothie".Instead of using water making the smoothie, we use tea, it creates refreshing taste to our drinks.

What made you exited to open a business on Park Slope's Fifth Avenue?
A: After success of our first store in Flushing, Queens, we wanted to expand our business. We have done our research on many areas such as Williamsburg, Astoria, and Manhattan. After my first visit to Park Slope, I really enjoyed the place. In my opinion, it is a really mature neighborhood. It is close by Barclays Center, and it has many upscale restaurants. Then, I realized it does not offer a tea room like ours. That made me excited to pen a business on Park Slope's Fifth Avenue.

When we visited last week, we learned that there is a now Japanese food offered at Teaus by a company called Kuma. Can you tell us more about what will be offered?
A: I am currently experimenting with all kind of food business in all of my stores. I am planning to serve some light food in our store, but I do not want to end up something like bakery-ish. Kuma is our temporary partner, and hopefully we can end up being a long-term partner. They serve light Japanese snacks and food! My current plan is to convert our stores to Fusion tea house.

Do you have any plans for events or specials at Teaus?
A: We do occasionally host some sort of events like "glass bottle drawing contest", where our customers can draw on our bottle and win a prize. Our next event probably will be Best Halloween Costume Contest. Details will be posted soon.

Have you had a moment to try some of the stores, bars, or restaurants along Fifth Avenue? If so, what are your favorites, so far? Any that you hope to try in the near future?
A: I noticed there are many bars in the areas, but really didn't have a chance to try. I did had the chance to try Shake Shack, which was really pleasant. I am looking forward to try some of the upscale Italian restaurants in the near future.
