New Report Out: Energizing New York's Small Businesses

If you are interested in sustainability issues-- and the health of your local mom and pops-- this report is for you! The Center for an Urban Future (CUF) reveals that only a fraction of the city's small businesses have taken steps to become energy efficient, a missed opportunity given that commercial electricity costs in NYC are among the highest in the country and since even the smallest firms could save thousands of dollars by implementing efficiency measures. Get some insight into the challenges facing small businesses on this front-- and check out CUF's recommendations going forward.

Moutarde Closed for Renovations

With closed doors, papered windows and hand-wrought signage, Moutarde has signaled that renovations have begun. After reporting on said changes months ago, All About Fifth is delighted to see they are in full swing. The note says that the popular French restaurant will be opening on March 15th-- but we're not sure that's real time or contractors time-- so keep posted. If we are lucky, we hope to get some exclusive sneak peeks of some of the changes for our readers in the coming weeks.

Fabulous on Fifth

Several weeks ago, the Park Slope Parents (PSP) listerv was lit up in controversy over a posting by a newly transplanted mom from California, concerned about the lack of "fabulous" in Park Slope.

The reaction by many of the PSP faithful was, predictably, strong (let's leave it at that). Not to be deterred, though, the fabulous mom "Courtney" decided to channel her energy into a new blog called (appropriately) Fabulous in Park Slope.

We are happy to report that Courtney recently discovered what we at All About Fifth already knew: there is plenty of Fabulous on Fifth!

Check out her recent post about Hog Mountain.

Another Store Closure

Found this sign last week at Matter. Here's to better days ahead:

Dear Friends of Matter,

After six years here we have decided to close up shop in Park Slope to focus more of our energy on developing the Matter Made collection. Our Manhattan location will remain open and there are future plans for an expansion to include many of the great products you've come to love from our store.

Our entire Brooklyn inventory is now on sale for 15 - 90% off. Check back often as discounts will increase leading up to our closing at the end of March.

There are no words to express the deep gratitude we have for your loyalty and patronage over the years.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you in Manhattan.

Yet Another Reason to Shop Local

Found the above sign on our walk along 5th Avenue yesterday. It reads:

Dear Customers, Friends and Neighbors –

We are very sad to announce that at the end of February, 3r Living will be closing our Park Slope store.

When we opened this store in April of 2004, it was a dream come true. Over the past five years we have been honored to provide the community with greener, healthier and safer options, as well as a much-needed community recycling center. We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of the customer and friends we have made over the years

This is not an end, but rather a new beginning. Look for us online at www.3rliving.com and 3rliving.blogspot.com.

Also, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE help us to make sure that this does not happen to other businesses in the area. Eat, drink and shop local! Supporting restaurants, boutiques and bars on 5th Avenue , even just a little, can go a very long way.

Sincerely,

Samantha and Mark Caserta
